Do you find yourself logging into Chrome, planning on doing some school research, or opening some productivity websites to get some work done, but then you find yourself pressing “y” and tapping enter?
If this sounds familiar, congratulations…you are human and struggle with something probably 95% of Internet users do.
My Dad made me a personal google account when I was 2, and gave me the account info then I got old enough to use it. This is the account I use for anything related to my personal and irl work life. If a form has an email requirement, this is the one that goes on it. When I was 13 I wanted to start a gaming YouTube channel. In order to do this I made a separate google account. I also started using this “public account” as I call it, as my login for anything entertainment related. Video games, YouTube, etc.
How does the benefit me now?
Well, I recently purchased a MacBook Pro (blog post & video COMING SOON!!!). Now I intended on using the MacBook only for school and work, so I created my Apple ID and set the computer up, and ONLY logged into my personal/productive google account. That way my YouTube feed is only educational videos, my public social media accounts aren’t logged in, and when I have the urge to go to a video game forum, or to tune into a StarCraft II video…it’s not an option.
This means that anytime I open my laptop to work, I have no distractions. If I open my gmail I will only see things that are generally helpful to my work flow. It isn’t full of the latest game updates. I also use a few chrome extensions to maximize efficiency but that’s another post for another time!
You see, I don’t think that humans are just born lazy and never want to do work, but we live in an age where digital distractions run rampant. One might sit down to write a college essay, and in turn get distracted by the Facebook bookmark they have on their screen. The intention was there, but the distraction stole the energy and now you don’t want to work. This is where having two accounts is HUGELY beneficial. Just eliminate the distractions and work!
How does this benefit you now? (See what I did there)
It’s likely that many of you reading this have one account you have used for everything, and sorting out everything entertainment related would be a massive nightmare. So instead I would recommend create another google account and dedicate the new one to productivity and make it a work-filled environment. Log into your Todoist, Hootsuite, and all your entrepreneurial social medias on this account so that whenever you feel like working there are no distractions!
Ultimately I hope you will take this and implement in whatever way works best for you! If you find a system that works well for you, let me know in the comment section!
Now go do something!
